Collection from 1763 Santa Barbara St SLO

The items listed below are the inventory list from the Gallagher Collection, now housed in the Museum Annex of the San Luis Obispo County Historic Museum. The items can be seen by calling the Museum, 805-543-0683, and making an appointment.

The collection was found lodged in the walls of 1763 Santa Barbara St. during reconstruction and restoration. The Tribune-Republic building, built in 1872 and on the National Register of Historic Places is the oldest wooden commercial building extant in the city. It was moved to its current location in 1905. A detailed history is available at the Museum and also at the Community Development Department of the City of San Luis Obispo, 805-781-7200.

G01_SB-LA_014.      Letter in envelope postmarked San Francisco Oct 11 addressed to Alf Pennington San Luis Obispo San Francisco Oct. 10th 1883 My Dear Husband, I think you might have written to me lately.  I am very weak and can just get around with our Ione. As day after day passes and no letter comes, I take a good cry to think that my own husband wont write to me because I was sick and not able to write to him more than once a week.  Well dear I’ll be home with Mary and Uncle Blake and I press that will be either Sunday or Monday if I dare. And then we may never have an occassion to have to write to each other again as the next time I leave you it will be impossible for me to write you.  Oh dear I surest not think of such a horrible thing. Ione is crying so I must hurry she is well and very fat & I think the prettiest and smartest child I have seen.  Well goodbye dear. Your own loving & faithful Wife - Belle Is my husband loving? And faithful too? Blake has come and says we will start home Saturday so you must have dinner ready for us when we get there.  I shall be so glad to see you once more. G01_SB-LA_016.      Inked Note. Judge F. Adams of this city is making a tour of the southern part of the state and has delivered a number of speeches in Los Angeles

and San Bernardino counties, the most enthusiastic being one delivered at the Opera house in San Bernardino last Saturday eveing.  Judge Adams who is a staunch Republican and an old Californian, was greeted with cheers by hundreds of citizens of place.  In his discourse he referred to the commence- ment of the chinese emigration to this coast, of this reception, of speeches made in their behalfs, of their acceptance to share the freedom and prosperity of this State who both of which they have taken.  In those days there were no Republicans, the state was ruled by Democrats, a Democratic Governor, a Democratic Mayor of the City of San Francisco and districts around. In his speech which was listened to (reverse) with great attention: he _____ed the progress of Cali(fornia) from 1849 & the present days, striking him and this act the State of National affairs and how much California has been injured by the Mongolian race. Judge Adams speech occupied one hour and thirty minutes during which time he was repeatedly appaulded For this masterly speech which was claimed as being the ablist speech and largest attraction making during the champaign.  SB-LA G01

G01_SB-LA_017.      Penciled note - A fake telegram was sent to Boston purporting to come from Mr. Wheelright, Mayor of Tacoma, stating that several hundred girls were ____ pressingly wanted on that city for wives to as many young men who were desirous of marrying, but could not as there were no marriagable women.  This was promptly denounced by the Mayor as a forge- ry of his name and a statement of falsehood, but the falsehood is more sensational than fact, and it keeps going with the tra- ditional seven league boots while ____ truth is exhausted and stop___ ____ effort.  SB_LA G01
